One person found this helpful. FUP is a wonderfully drafted Short Story. I might well seek him out. Tiny’s life was really only marked by one event prior to his making the acquaintance of his grandfather and that was the death of his mother. Books by Jim Dodge. The part where Grandaddy Jake tries to teach Fup to fly and ends up losing the few teeth he has left is hilarious, and the one where financial ruin for our threesome is luckily prevented by the foolishness of a nirvana-seeking hippy left me in stitches.
It’s a painfully short book – only barely long enough to lose yourself in – but every syllable is inspired. The fable part of the story is one of the last things to happen.

Fup – a modern fable by Jim Dodge
Often came across this book in Borders book shop, Glasgow, but never did get a copy. You just read it. Fup was generally indifferent to Westerns, except for seemingly arbitrary scenes when she would quack excitedly. An interviewer read that last uim to Dodge and asked him: I needed way longer than I should have for this little bit of text and the book wasn’t “extremely” funny but there were two scenes at which I laughed out loud.
The ending is a bit odd. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. Fup is a wonderfully funny and bittersweet book that really should be read outloud, I read it to my son when he was ten – carefully editing the few obscenities – and we roared with laughter.

This is someone who could describe next to nothing happening and hold you entranced the entire time! THAT was how I felt. As an adult he spent many years living on an almost self-sufficient commune in West Sonoma County, California.

It’s not that I didn’t like the book because I did like the book — I liked it a lot and I’ll tell you about it if you’ll give me a minute — but I’m not a fervid individual at the best of times so maybe it’s simply me. I love this book. The quackiness of this novel has burst into a heartwarming mushroom cloud of feathers and confetti raining down on my once sad existence. One evening, after days and nights of frustrating rain, and no fence building, Tiny finds a baby mallard close to death in one of his sodden fencepost holes.
There are three protagonists in the book: I’d never heard of Jim Dodge before and all I know know is what the blurb tells me; he lives on an isolated ranch in western Sonoma County.
