I liked this one so much that I had to read it a second time, several years later. I still don’t know how they got back since the book just trailed off.
Eternity Road by Jack McDevitt
Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. But everyone who went north before mcdevitf come back. This is my first time reading this author’s work. Muller rated it really liked it. The story is mainly hinged on the group of characters interested in finding out what happened to a previous expedition that went north to find ‘Haven’.
The motivations of each of the characters are flimsy even when the reasons they give are valid. There are some gaps in the world-building. One of the best post-apocalyptic books I’ve read. I read this years ago, but kinda forgot it.

Evidently we are in a future earth. But still a very inventive novel with a nice twist. The one he keeps he hides, and wills it to a young woman he barely knows. Especially when McDevitt describes the many ruins of the ancient Roadmakers civilization, or when the band leaves the Crooked Man, a tavern at the edge of civilization, or when they try to cross the Wabash River.
This felt like reading a Lonely Planet guide to the northeast United States many centuries in the future. Good story arc, continues the saga. Etednity characters start out assuming that a plague wiped etsrnity out. And of course Silas, the most intellectually engaged and curious of the group, was too dead to investigate further. McDevitt was certainly justified in thinking that intelligent readers would have a basic understanding of the history itself, so as to know automatically what history books could kcdevitt expected to relate; and to sumarize the contents of that many books at the end of this one would have made the ending unnecessarily bulky and anti-climactic.

Jack McDevitt etegnity just that. He posits the total disappearance of Christianity, to the point where scholars of that day have only hazy and incomplete defective ideas about its beliefs, and its replacement by a new polytheism.
Another expedition is formed. In one sense, the craftsmanship is impeccable. Our civilization has vanished.
The simple fact is that Jack McDevitt is a very skilled and talented writer and should not be overlooked. Mike says that there were others like him who survived the end of the Roadbuilder civilization, but that is never explored any further. Trivia About Eternity Road. View all 3 comments. Roas consider it to be Post-Apocalyptic Lite. I think Jack McDevitt fits that mold. In fact, the people of Earth’s past are called “The Roadmakers” because of the highway systems that still exist.
Mankind was decimated in almost three centuries ago and most technology was lost and books are rare. Even allowing for his agnostic worldview b regardless of Christian truth claims, this isn’t realistic, any more than positing the total disappearance of Islam from the Middle East, or of Hinduism from India, years after the collapse of the present civilization.
The 4 star rating comes because of a few minor problems I encountered. He was also the only character I felt had much depth, and the only one whose death I cared about. We are not talking award-winner here–but most SF fans will find it a pleasant and interesting read. Tolkien and Raymond E.
Further, McDevitt is to be commended for a near-flawless point-of-view in which survivors with a primitive perspective judge their technological predecessors. I see,” than one where you go “Holy shit! That’s the case here.
